In a recent forum, experts highlighted the crucial synergy between Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and the burgeoning e-commerce sector as pivotal to Kenya’s economic growth trajectory.

Kenya’s economy thrives on its diverse MSME sector, encompassing over 7.4 million enterprises across key industries such as agriculture, logistics, and services. These enterprises, predominantly led by young entrepreneurs, contribute significantly—40 percent—to the nation’s GDP.

Central to discussions was BrighterMonday Kenya’s e-Biz Kwa Vijana initiative, launched in May 2023 to equip MSMEs with essential e-commerce and digital marketing skills. By its completion in June 2024, the program successfully trained over 2,000 beneficiaries and facilitated the integration of 632 MSMEs into online trading platforms.

Entrepreneur success stories underscored the program’s impact, with Victor Waliaula of Nairobi citing a notable 30 percent revenue increase post-training. Similarly, Lilian Wairimu from Jegos Enterprises reported a significant 50 percent rise in sales, attributing it to enhanced online visibility and marketing strategies.

Funded by USAID under the e-Trade Alliance, the initiative also prioritized support for women entrepreneurs and individuals with disabilities, reflecting its commitment to inclusivity in economic empowerment.

Chris Otundo, CEO of BrighterMonday Kenya, emphasized the program’s role in addressing Africa’s digital skills gap, stating, “E-commerce offers a transformative opportunity for local entrepreneurs by empowering them with the tools to capitalize on digital marketplaces.”

Acting Secretary in the State Department for Trade, Michael Mandu, reiterated the government’s dedication to fostering an enabling environment for business innovation through the Kenya National E-commerce Strategy. This strategy aims not only to spur economic growth but also to promote digital inclusivity across all sectors.

Kenya’s leadership in digital trade was highlighted, with the e-commerce sector projected to achieve revenues of $2.928 trillion in 2023. Mandu emphasized the significant contribution of MSMEs and youth-led enterprises to this growth, citing their role in job creation and sustainable economic development.

As Kenya continues its digital transformation journey, initiatives like e-Biz Kwa Vijana are pivotal in driving resilience and inclusive economic growth, ensuring that every entrepreneur can thrive in the evolving digital economy.
