Kenya Launches 'Year of Return' Initiative to Harness African Diaspora Investment

Kenya is preparing to launch its own rendition of the “Year of Return” initiative, following Ghana’s successful implementation in 2019. Spearheaded by President William Ruto, this initiative aims to attract members of the African diaspora worldwide to reconnect with their ancestral homeland and contribute to Kenya’s economic growth.

The Year of Return initiative, originally championed by Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, revitalized tourism and increased foreign remittances significantly. Inspired by this success, Kenya aims to replicate the impact by hosting a summit at the Sarit Centre from October 8 to 9, 2024.

George Kegode, a key organizer, highlighted the initiative’s broader goals: “Beyond tourism, the Year of Return Kenya seeks to catalyze foreign investment, job creation, and cultural exchange. It’s about tapping into the skills and resources of the African diaspora to drive sustainable development.”

The summit will feature diverse masterclasses led by industry experts such as Hollywood’s Peter Macon, focusing on arts, entrepreneurship, and technology tailored to Africa’s abundant youth and natural resources. Discussions will also center on fostering intra-Africa trade and empowering young entrepreneurs.

Preparations are already underway with roadshows planned across major cities in the United States and Kenya to mobilize participation and collaboration.

Supported by influential figures like Council of Governors chair Anne Waiguru and US Ambassador Meg Whitman, Kenya’s Year of Return initiative aims to redefine its global economic engagement by inviting the African diaspora not just to visit, but to invest, innovate, and build sustainable partnerships.
