Principal Secretary Omollo underscored the far-reaching implications, asserting, “This development will not only facilitate trade between our two countries but will also open up the broader East African region, encompassing South Sudan and Djibouti. It is poised to amplify cross-border business activities significantly.”
To address congestion concerns at the primary international Busia and Malaba border facilities, Kenya and Uganda are actively strategizing the enhancement of the Lwakhakha one-stop border station in Bungoma. Omollo further affirmed, “The establishment of these two new border posts will intricately enhance regional interconnectivity and subsequently expand market access. We are reinforcing our personnel to elevate service quality at these Customs points.”
In parallel, the Ugandan government is steadfastly modernizing the Suam-Bukwo-Kapchorwa road, underscoring their commitment to revitalizing the Suam crossing and ushering in a new wave of economic prosperity.
However, Sudi Mwatela, the chairperson of the Kenya Long Distance Truck Drivers and Allied Workers’ Union, sounded a note of caution. He stressed the imperative of introducing comprehensive safety measures, remarking, “While this road upgrade promises to alleviate congestion, we urge authorities to focus on safety measures on the Uganda side due to the steep and risky nature of the road. Neglecting safety precautions could lead to avoidable loss of lives.”
Principal Secretary Omollo highlighted that beyond its economic ramifications, the project’s significance extends to bolstering inter-country security and catalyzing business growth. He affirmed, “This project stands as a pivotal collaboration between our two nations, designed to expedite business clearance procedures and provide substantial support to local investors. Our citizens should brace themselves for heightened cross-border trade activities in the near future.”
As construction gains momentum on the Suam border crossing, Kenya and Uganda stand on the threshold of a transformative trade route that is poised to redefine economic dynamics across the East African region. The cooperative efforts between these nations reflect a forward-thinking approach to regional integration, heralding a new era of seamless cross-border commerce.
