Kenya and EU Strengthen Economic Ties with New Partnership Agreement

Share

Kenya and the European Union have solidified their economic partnership with the signing of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) on Tuesday. The ceremony, hosted at Nairobi’s State House and attended by the EU Delegation led by Ambassador Henriette Geiger, marks a significant step towards enhancing trade and investment between the two regions.

President William Ruto welcomed the agreement, emphasizing its potential to improve trade, investment, and regulatory environments, benefiting both Kenyan and European businesses. The EPA aims to create job opportunities and support Kenya’s economic development, with the EU being Kenya’s primary export destination and second-largest trading partner.

Key features of the EPA include the full opening of the EU market for Kenyan products upon implementation, providing a boost for local businesses and exporters. Additionally, the agreement seeks to encourage EU investment in Kenya by offering increased legal certainty and stability.

Notably, the EPA includes robust sustainability provisions covering climate and environmental protection, labor rights, and gender equality. Kenya’s active involvement in sustainability initiatives, including co-leading the Coalition of Trade Ministers on Climate, aligns with the EU’s objectives in combating climate change.

Beyond bilateral cooperation, the EPA serves as a template for engagement within the broader East African Community (EAC), inviting other EAC countries to join in the future. This move towards regional economic integration aligns with the EU’s broader trade agenda, focused on deepening ties with Africa and advancing sustainability goals.

The signing of the Economic Partnership Agreement signifies a commitment to mutual prosperity and shared values between Kenya and the EU, paving the way for a more sustainable and interconnected future.
