Addressing the pressing issue of unemployment in Gauteng, the Department of Employment and Labour, under the leadership of Minister Thulas Nxesi, announced the launch of labor activation programmes aimed at generating job opportunities across various sectors in the region.
Partnering with private businesses, Skills Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), the government has allocated R8.4 billion from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) to implement 105 programmes spanning industries such as agriculture, IT, construction, hospitality, and transport.
Minister Nxesi emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing unemployment, highlighting the significance of government and stakeholders working together to create sustainable employment opportunities. This initiative is part of a larger national job creation plan, with R23.8 billion allocated to create over 700,000 jobs nationwide.
Recognizing the role of economic growth in reducing unemployment, Minister Nxesi stressed the need for comprehensive strategies to drive development. The launch event brought together beneficiaries of the labour activation programmes, project owners, government officials, and stakeholders, demonstrating a unified commitment to addressing the unemployment challenge.
Participants selected for these programmes will undergo recruitment and training processes facilitated by the Department of Employment and Labour’s Employment Services of South Africa database (ESSA), ensuring transparency and fairness in the selection process.
