In a strategic move aimed at enhancing its presence in Africa, Qatar Airways has disclosed plans to invest in a prominent airline operating in the southern region of the continent. CEO Badr Mohammed Al Meer shared this development during a panel discussion at the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha on Wednesday.
Al Meer emphasized the significance of this investment, stating that it addresses a crucial gap in Qatar Airways’ network coverage in Africa. The forthcoming announcement, expected within the next two to three weeks, signifies a milestone in the Gulf carrier’s expansion strategy.
Since assuming the role of CEO in November, Al Meer has been steering Qatar Airways towards ambitious growth objectives. One key aspect of this strategy is the expansion of partner airline fleets in Africa to improve connectivity and accessibility for travelers across the continent.
Qatar Airways has demonstrated its commitment to the African market through previous strategic ventures, such as its acquisition of a majority stake in a major international airport project in Rwanda back in 2019. Additionally, the airline has established code-share agreements with several prominent carriers in the region, including Rwandair.
Providing insights into the progress of aviation infrastructure development in Africa, Yvonne Manzi Makolo, CEO of Rwandair, discussed the potential timeline for the completion of the airport project during the forum.
This upcoming investment in a southern African airline underscores Qatar Airways’ commitment to expanding its global footprint while fostering closer ties with the African continent. As the aviation industry evolves, Qatar Airways remains dedicated to innovation and delivering exceptional passenger experiences worldwide.
