Centenary Bank Introduces CenteWhatsApp Banking for Instant and Secure Financial Transactions

Share

Centenary Bank, one of Uganda’s premier commercial banks, has launched CenteWhatsApp banking, a groundbreaking platform that allows customers to access a range of banking services instantly and securely through the widely used messaging app, WhatsApp.

The innovative CenteWhatsApp banking service empowers customers to conveniently check account balances, make money transfers, pay bills, receive real-time notifications, and even apply for a mobile loan of up to UGX 5 million ($1,307.76). To initiate the service, users simply need to save the bank’s verified WhatsApp number, 0744 200 555, in their phone contacts and start the process by sending a message. A user-friendly menu will then appear, allowing customers to effortlessly select their desired option and complete transactions.

All transactions conducted within the CenteWhatsApp banking service are fortified with an additional layer of security in the form of a One Time PIN (OTP) sent to the customer’s registered bank number.

This strategic move taps into the widespread usage of WhatsApp, extending banking services to a broader audience through the convenience of the popular messaging app on mobile devices. Users can now perform transactions at their convenience, irrespective of time or location.

The launch of CenteWhatsApp banking aligns with projections indicating that 7.48 million people in Uganda will be online by 2024, constituting 14.99% of the total population. As of 2023, WhatsApp usage in Uganda stands at 4.5 million, while 34% of the population already possesses a bank account, according to the World Population Review.

Fabian Kasi, the Managing Director of Centenary Bank, underscored the exceptional opportunity presented by the launch, emphasizing the bank’s commitment to providing easy, secure, and accessible banking solutions. Kasi highlighted the familiar and user-friendly interface provided by WhatsApp, enabling users to manage their finances conveniently through instant messaging. In the case of issues, users can expect prompt responses and the option to connect with a call center representative.

A recent Juniper research study predicts that by 2026, 53% of the global population will utilize digital banking services, marking a significant increase from 2.5 billion users in 2021 to over 4.2 billion.

Centenary Bank, boasting an asset base of UGX 5.5 trillion ($1,442,039,500), serves over 2.4 million customers through 79 branches, 205 ATMs, over 7,000 agents, and a variety of digital channels, including CenteMobile banking, CenteOnline banking, CenteVisa debit and prepaid cards, and the Mastercard Platinum debit card.
