In a significant stride towards boosting agricultural productivity and enhancing livelihoods, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has unveiled an upcoming phase of farmer registration for fertilizer subsidy. The announcement, made during a dynamic address on Saturday, August 12, 2023, signifies the Kenyan government’s commitment to supporting its agricultural sector.
Addressing a spirited crowd in the North Rift region, Gachagua disclosed that the fresh registration initiative is in tandem with the ongoing distribution of subsidized fertilizers. This next phase of registration targets farmers who were previously not part of the system, emphasizing inclusivity in the agricultural support program.
Gachagua’s call for unity and collaboration resonated strongly, as he urged Kenyans participating in protests to redirect their energies towards registering for the fertilizer subsidy. “In the coming week, we will introduce another program. I urge your communities to set aside demonstrations and actively register for subsidized fertilizers. All our efforts lead back to the field,” Gachagua proclaimed with conviction.
The Deputy President reiterated the success of the initial rollout of the subsidy program, highlighting the potential for bumper maize harvests this year among registered farmers. Recognizing the vital role of maize in the nation’s diet, Gachagua shared plans to ensure ample availability of maize dryers, streamlining the drying process for farmers. He further disclosed that the government and farmers would collaboratively share the costs associated with drying maize.
Gachagua’s announcement also shed light on President William Ruto’s directives. The President has instructed the National Treasury and National Cereals and Produce Board to allocate substantial funds for maize procurement, with the aim of expediting payments and reducing intermediary intervention.
While emphasizing the importance of agricultural productivity in curbing living costs, Gachagua reaffirmed the government’s dedication to the success of the program. The Deputy President also extended his call for collaboration to Members of Parliament (MPs), encouraging them to serve their constituents’ needs diligently and fairly.
