Safaricom Ethiopia, the pioneering private telecom operator in the nation, has achieved remarkable progress since its inception in August 2022. The company recently marked significant achievements, including the expansion of its network, the launch of vital services, and the formation of strategic partnerships aimed at transforming Ethiopia’s telecommunications landscape.

In a groundbreaking move, Safaricom Ethiopia commenced its network rollout in August 2022, initially in the city of Dire Dawa situated in the eastern region of the country. The telecom giant further strengthened its presence by officially inaugurating its nationwide network in October 2022. The grand launch took place in the nation’s capital, Addis Ababa, along with ten other key cities.

Breaking through the telecoms monopoly that had prevailed for decades, Safaricom Ethiopia secured the distinction of being Ethiopia’s first private telecom operator. This historic achievement was celebrated globally, as it signaled the end of one of the world’s last telecoms monopolies.

A pivotal moment came in May 2023 when Safaricom Ethiopia was granted a mobile money license, setting the stage for the imminent launch of mobile financial services. This transformative step is set to leverage Safaricom’s successful M-Pesa fintech platform, which has gained substantial popularity and profitability in various markets.

In the same vein, Safaricom Ethiopia’s journey has been marked by exceptional leadership transitions. Following the departure of Anwar Soussa at the end of July 2023, former MTN executive Wim Vanhelleputte is set to take over the reins as CEO in September 2023. This transition promises to further elevate Safaricom Ethiopia’s strategic direction and operational excellence.

A significant boost arrived through the collaboration with prominent institutions of the World Bank Group. At a prestigious funding ceremony in Addis Ababa on Monday, Safaricom Ethiopia sealed a groundbreaking deal with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA). The partnership aims to propel Safaricom’s mission to provide affordable Internet and reliable connectivity across Ethiopia.
